Oulu comprehensive school sports emphasis classes operate in Kastelli and Kaukovainio Schools for grades 3-6. The classes operate in Kastelli School for grades 7-9.
Info sessions on special subject emphasis classes will be held in January 2024.

Sports emphasis classes offer physically talented pupils the opportunity to move and exercise according to their own skill level and get joy out of exercising. The aim is to promote the children’s growth and development through versatile and thrilling sport experiences. The aim is that a pupil has the opportunity to move at minimum the amount of recommended physical activity during the school day.
Sports classes are organised in accordance with the national curriculum. In addition, there is an opportunity to participate in clubs. There are 5–6 hours of sports and exercise per week in grades 3-6. The classes and clubs are arranged so that the child can enjoy guided exercise daily. Sports class students actively participate in the city’s sports events and school sports competitions.

Kastelli School participates in the national sports lower secondary school activity coordinated by the Finnish Olympic Committee. Sports emphasis classes in grades 7–9 operate in Kastelli School.
Sports classes provide pupils with versatile basic physical skills. They develop a pupil into a talented exerciser and improve their skills in their distinct sport. The classes aim to promote pupils’ growth into goal-oriented athletes, develop their skills on different sectors and support them in combining school and sports.
There are 4 sports lessons per week in grade 7, 6 hours in grade 8 and 6 hours in grade 9. In addition, the studies include the Sports Academy –Programme’s study contents by the Olympic Committee. Studies also include club activities and general coaching both supporting training and developing versatile skills in sports and exercise.
Additional teaching, club activities or coaching are organised in collaboration with school physical education teachers and the Oulu Region Sports Academy coaches.
The sports class is meant for pupils who do sports goal-oriented and competitively. Applicants’ versatile sports skills are measured in the entrance exam.
Applying for sports classes in grades 3-6
The guardian of a second-grader can apply for a place in a sports emphasis class between 24 January and 5 February 2024 by filling in the electronic application form in the address: https://ouka.inschool.fi/browsecourses.
A pupil can apply for a place in one or several special subject emphasis classes. If you are applying for a place in several classes, please apply for all the classes with one application form. You can place your applications in an order of preference.
Primary school entrance exam is organized 13 February 2024 in Kastelli Community Centre from 9.30-13.00. Pupils will gather in hall A dressed in indoor exercise equipment at 9.30. The entrance to the centre goes through the main door. The lobby has guidance to the dressing rooms starting from 9.00.
Pupils need to bring their own indoor exercise equipment and snack. Every pupil applying for a sports emphasis class must take the entrance exam. There will be no separate invitation to the exam. Admissions are made based on the applicants’ basic physical qualities.
Third grade admission decisions will appear in Wilma 18 March 2024. A written decision will be mailed 18 March 2024 to those who have chosen to receive a decision in writing. A guardian must confirm accepting a place within a week of receiving the admission decision. The confirmation is confirmed by the assigned special emphasis class school secretary.

Applying for sports classes in grades 7-9
The guardian of a sixth-grader can apply for a place in a sports emphasis class between 24 January and 5 February 2024 by filling in the electronic application form in the address: https://ouka.inschool.fi/browsecourses.
A pupil can apply for a place in one or several special subject emphasis classes. If you are applying for a place in several classes, please apply for all the classes with one application form. You can place your applications in an order of preference.
All applicants must participate in a two-day entrance exam organized on Wednesday 14 February and Thursday 15 February 2024. There will be no separate invitation to the exam.
On Wednesday’s exam, pupils will need to bring their own footwear, indoor exercise equipment, snack and water bottle. Wednesday’s exam will be held in Kastelli Community Centre. The entrance exam schedule (basic part and supplementary part) and instructions are updated on the Kastelli School website in the beginning of 2024 (in Finnish).
Seventh grade admission decisions will appear in Wilma 2 April 2024. A written decision will be mailed 2 April 2024 to those who have chosen to receive a decision in writing.
