Oulu comprehensive school art emphasis classes for grades 3-6 operate in Hintta and Myllytulli Schools. Classes for grades 7-9 operate in Myllytulli School.
All info sessions on special subject emphasis classes are held in January 2024.

Studying in an art class
Art emphasis class offers in-depth art teaching for pupils who are motivated to study arts long-term. The pupil's world of experience is approached through the core educational contents of arts in the national curriculum, providing pupils with age-appropriate challenges.
The key concept in the class is developing and strengthening the pupils’ individual visual expression. The pupil is encouraged to engage in an inner dialogue with themselves and the world by observing, exploring and experimenting together through making pictures and learning from them. Pupils are encouraged to look for and try new solutions broad-mindedly, hone their technical skills and develop their knowledge on materials. In addition, making independent choices, acquiring knowledge and applying it to practice, learning different concepts and self-assessing are important in the process of arts.
The meaning of collaboration in art is also highlighter in addition to developing the pupils’ own expression, Visual arts classes create the foundation for general visual education and knowledge on visual culture. The class strengthens the pupils’ aesthetic and ethical orientation in life. A pupil in art emphasis class enjoys arts.
Art is taught 4 lessons a week in grades 3–9. In addition, teaching can take place in clubs. The primary school art emphasis classes begin in Hintta and Myllytulli Schools and the lower secondary school class arts class in Myllytulli school.
Hintta School art teaching emphasizes especially design education and experimental culture as part of art education. Myllytulli School is part of the national network of Alvar Aalto schools. The art curriculum includes diverse education on design and architecture in grades 3–9. Both schools also collaborate with the Design Museum Designmuseo’s ado.fi network.
Applying for art classes in grades 3-6
The guardian of a second-grader can apply for a place in an art class between 24 January and 5 February 2024 by filling in the electronic application form in the address: https://ouka.inschool.fi/browsecourses.
A pupil can apply for a place in one or several special subject emphasis classes. If you are applying for a place in several classes, please apply for all the classes with one application form. You can place your applications in an order of preference.
There will be no separate invitation to entrance exams for art classes. Pupils who are applying for third grade will execute a pencil drawing, a design assignment and a colorful piece in the exam. The entrance exam for grade 3 art classes is organized in both Hintta and Myllytulli Schools 14 February 2024 from 9-12. Applicants in both schools will gather collectively in the lower lobby before the exam begins.
Third grade admission decisions will appear in Wilma 18 March 2024. A written decision will be mailed 18 March 2024 to those who have chosen to receive a decision in writing.
Applying for art classes in grades 7-9
The guardian of a sixth-grader can apply for a place in an art class between 24 January and 5 February 2024 by filling in the electronic application form in the address: https://ouka.inschool.fi/browsecourses. When transitioning to lower secondary school, a sixth-grader in an art class does not need to take the entrance exam again. Only a guardian's confirmation of continuing to study in the special class is needed. The guardian must respond to a survey regarding a child’s continuation in a special class by 15 December 2023.

The entrance exam for grade 7 art classes is organized in Myllytulli School 21 February 2024 from 8.30-14.00. Applicants in both schools will gather collectively in the lower lobby before the exam begins.
Seventh grade admission decisions will appear in Wilma 2 April 2024. A written decision will be mailed 2 April 2024 to those who have chosen to receive a decision in writing.
