Waste Management

Waste management is the sorting, collection, transportation and treatment of waste

A waste collection point must be appointed on every property for the waste generated on the property, and waste containers must be used in the collection point according to the Waste Act and waste management regulations. Recycling and delivering waste to the collection point is the duty of the residents and other people operating on the property.

In our region, the municipal waste management services are handled by Kiertokaari Oy. Kiertokaari is responsible for, for example, the services of the Rusko Waste Treatment Centre, municipal waste drop-off points, receiving hazardous waste of households, recycling of organic and packaging waste of properties as well as giving waste advice.

The official duties of waste management are the responsibility of the regional waste management division under the Oulu Urban Environmental Committee. The waste management division is responsible for the official duties of waste management of Hailuoto, Ii, Kempele, Lumijoki, Oulu and Pudasjärvi. The official duties of waste management include approving waste management regulations and approving deviations to the regulations, approving waste management charges and supervising the realization of waste management.

The supervision of the realization of waste management is the responsibility of environmental protection officials: in the Oulu region the supervising officials are the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of Northern Finland and the Environment Office of the Oulu Region’s board of directors as well as the environmental protection officials of Ii and Pudasjärvi. It is the duty of the officials to intervene in problems in waste management.
