Tool Camp solves modern challenges
The Tool Camp Day for early childhood education, primary schools and middle schools is organized on Tuesday. For the third time already, Tool Camp challenges the children and young people of Oulu to solve modern challenges utilizing STEAM pedagogy. STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.
Tool Camp is an entirety that celebrates inventiveness, creativity and collaboration in which children and young people of different ages work on challenges and come up with solutions for them. The challenges bring together different subjects and teaching methods. This year, there are challenges in three themes: Energy from Nature, Wellbeing and Security and City of the Future.
Tool Camp consists of activities at the daycare centres or schools and on the Tool Camp Day. On Tuesday May 21, the groups will present their creative and responsible solutions to the public and the jury. Early childhood education, primary school and middle school groups of 3–5 that have come up with solutions are participating in the Tool Camp. On the Tool Camp Day, the jury will familiarize themselves with the groups’ activities, productions and presentations. The jury will award the groups in different categories. There are separate categories for early childhood education, primary school and middle school groups.
“Amazing North is a lovely spring trip destination for school classes. The Science Centre Tietomaa is currently closed, but, in a way, there is an extended Tietomaa at the Energia Arena for two days. There is much to see and learn for children and young people. There are interesting speakers there too”, the city of Oulu’s STEAM Coordinator Paula Vorne explains.
Oulu Regional Transport sells inexpensive event tickets to the city of Oulu for the two event days. In this way, early childhood education and school groups can travel to the event on the bus.
The patron of the event is the futurist, non-fiction writer and inventor of the MusiClock, Perttu Pölönen.
Amazing North is organized in cooperation between the city of Oulu’s Education and Cultural Services, Oulu’s STEAM Network, the University of Oulu and the Regional State Administrative Agency of Northern Finland’s Educational Services Unit.
