The city of Oulu participates in the Government’s anti-racism campaign
The city of Oulu has joined the Government’s anti-racism campaign. The city commits to intervene in discrimination, root out racism and thus promote equality in Oulu in all its sectors. The Government campaign’s goal is to create a fairer society where every person is an equal part of Finland and feels respected, heard, seen and valued regardless of their background.
The city of Oulu has defined concrete courses of action with which the city participates in the Government’s anti-racism campaign: the city compiles an anti-racism action plan, cooperates with Finland’s six largest cities in education, and adopts principles of safe space.
The city of Oulu’s anti-racism action plan will be finished during November 2024. The implementation of the actions will be monitored regularly.
The city of Oulu will cooperate in education with the six largest cities to educate the city’s staff about anti-racism. Simultaneously, dialogue between different city employees about the campaign themes is made possible.
The city of Oulu will adopt principles of safe space, meaning an environment where people can feel safe, respected and heard. In a safe space every person’s right to be themselves is respected, and discrimination, racism and other inappropriate behavior is not tolerated. The city ensures the implementation of safe spaces by, for example, anticipating potential problems and agreeing on methods of interference.
