Water Area Management

The city of Oulu owns a total of 6,500 ha of water areas, of which approx. 5,600 ha are comprised of sea area and river delta. Water areas owned by the city of Oulu include the following areas:

  • The sea areas located in front of the city of Oulu from Kempeleenlahti to Letonniemi, the Hietakari and Kellonlahti water areas in Haukipudas as well as two separate water areas in Patelanselkä
  • The Oulujoki and Sanginjoki rivers up to the border of Muhos and a small portion of the Kalimenoja river
  • Lakes Pyykösjärvi, Kuivasjärvi, Niilesjärvi, Valkiaisjärvi, Lylyjärvi, Kinnulanjärvi, Kaitajärvi, Syväjärvi, Ahmasjärvi, Lämsänjärvi and Haapajärvi
  • Mustalampi, Huutilampi, Suolampi, Sankilampi, Pykälikönlampi ja Lintulampi

One of the main goals of the city of Oulu's environmental programme 2026 is diverse nature and a good ecological condition of waterways. Restoration measures for the water areas owned by the city of Oulu are carried out in accordance with the restoration programme (in Finnish, abstract in English) in the defined order of priority.
