Snow ploughing and anti-skid treatment
The city ensures snow ploughing and anti-skid treatment for its public access streets and pedestrian and cycle paths that are under its maintenance in city plan areas. The roadways and the pedestrian and cycle paths are divided into three maintenance classes based on their traffic-related importance.
You can view the city’s street maintenance classifications in Oulu Region Map Service.
Winter maintenance is executed in the order of the maintenance classes.
Unexpected weather conditions may delay street maintenance.
Street maintenance classes
Roadways, maintenance class I
The road is ploughed from snow within four hours of when the amount of snow on the ground is 3 cm. On weekdays, the road is cleared from snow between 7.00 and again by 16.00. During continuous snowfall, the roadways are maintained in trafficable condition. Slush is removed when its amount on the ground is 3 cm. When the street freezes over, it will be salted or gritted within three hours.
Roadways, maintenance class II
The road is ploughed from snow within four hours of when the amount of snow on the ground is 6 cm and immediately after the roadways in maintenance class I. If the amount of snow on the ground exceeds 6 cm, snow is also ploughed during snowfall. Slush is removed when its amount on the ground is 5 cm. When the street freezes over, it will be salted or gritted within six hours.
Roadways, maintenance class III
The road is cleared within 12 hours of when the amount of snow on the ground is 6 cm and immediately after the roadways in maintenance class II. Slush is removed when its amount on the ground is 5 cm. When the street freezes over, slipperiness is prevented by salting or gritting the street within ten hours.
Main cycle lane routes, maintenance class Super
The cycle lane is cleared from snow within three hours from when the amount of snow on the ground is 2 cm (between 5.00 and 11.00) or 4 cm (11.00-5.00). Slush is removed when its amount on the ground is 2 cm (between 5.00-23.00) or 3 cm (11.00-5.00). Anti-skid treatment includes gritting or graining the lane’s surface. When the cycle lane freezes over, anti-skid treatment is carried out within three hours or when the lane is noticeably slippery.
Pedestrian and cycle paths, maintenance class I
The pedestrian and cycle paths are ploughed from snow within four hours of when the amount of snow on the path is 3 cm. On weekday mornings, paths are ploughed due to nightly snowfall by 7.00 and by 16.00. Slush is removed when its amount on the ground is 2 cm. The path is gritted or salted within three hours of when the path is noticeably slippery.
Pedestrian and cycle paths, maintenance class II
The pedestrian and cycle paths are ploughed from snow within six hours of when the amount of snow on the ground is 5 cm and immediately after maintenance class I. Slush is removed when its amount on the ground is 4 cm. The paths are gritted or salted within four hours of when the paths are noticeably slippery.
