Station Centre will be built next to the city center of Oulu in the station area, which will in the future serve the whole of northern Finland as a modern and urban hub for events, urban culture, travel and business. An experience arena is planned to be built directly next to Station Centre on the site of the former police station and courthouse. The location of the arena next to Station Centre is excellent, as traffic connections from all directions bring travelers directly to events.
The goal of the development of the Station Centre area is to strengthen the vitality and attractive living environment of the city center and to increase the integrity of the urban structure and unique architecture of our city. In the future, Station Centre will be a traffic junction through which a significant number of passengers will travel. This meeting point of public transport routes will in time seamlessly connect the areas of Raksila and the city center.
The city center of Oulu and its surrounding areas have been developed systematically for decades. The urban environment is being renewed for the future, and the planning takes into account the needs of the residents above all.
On December 28, 2023, the city of Oulu and Senate Station Properties Ltd signed a real estate transaction regarding the Station Centre area. As a result of the real estate transaction, the area on the east side of the railway line and the bus station buildings located in the area will become the property of the city of Oulu. The purchase price was 14 million euros. The old station building on the west side of the track will remain the property of Senate Station Properties Ltd.
In addition to the city of Oulu, Senate Station Properties Ltd and Senate Properties, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, responsible for the development and maintenance of the state road network, railways and waterways, and the railway operator VR Group have been involved in the development of the area.
A change of the detailed plan for the station center area is currently being prepared.
