Let’s light up Finland in shades of blue and white

Illuminate your home, workplace, or a special place in blue and white in honor of Independence Day from December 5 at 6:00 PM to December 7 at 9:00 AM.

You can also place two candles in your window on December 6 at 6:00 PM.

Let’s raise the flags on Independence Day

In traditional fashion, Independence Day is a flag-flying day. Festive flag-raising will take place throughout the city from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Let’s enjoy coffee in honor of Finland on the eve of Independence Day

On the eve of Independence Day, December 5, the city encourages people to enjoy a blue-and-white coffee moment with loved ones at 2:00 PM. The table doesn’t need to be fancy, nor the atmosphere formal—the shared moment is what matters most.

Explore the stories of the hero graves

Through the cemetery's online portal at oulu.hautausmaat.fi, you can explore the grave maps of Oulu's hero cemeteries and the stories of the soldiers laid to rest there. Over a thousand soldiers who fell in the wars of 1939–1945 have been buried in the hero graves in the Oulu area.
