Allotment Gardening

Allotment gardening in Oulu

The city of Oulu rents gardening allotments in community gardens all over the city. The size of one allotment is approximately 10 m x 10 m. In 2025, there are eight (8) community gardens. The allotments primarily utilize one-year agreements, but there are some multi-year allotments as well.

Allotment gardening is a refreshing, fun, inexpensive, ecological and health-beneficial hobby – rent an allotment for yourself!

Rent renewal period for people who have rented allotments in the summer of 2024 begins on March 24, 2025, and ends on May 5, 2025.

After the renewal period, free allotments can be rented between May 5, 2025, and September 30, 2025. Rentals are done via the Online Booking Service or at Oulu10 Service Points. See the locations and opening times of Oulu10 Service Points here

If you wish to authorize another person to rent an allotment for you at Oulu10, please write a power of attorney document which includes your name, social security number, e-mail address and phone number.

The prize of one allotment in 2025 is 24 € (0 % VAT, 27§ tax exemption). The Online Booking Service is opened during March for people who have rented an allotment in 2024. If an allotment is not booked and paid by the deadline, the allotment will be automatically freed for rental. Before renting an allotment, read through the city of Oulu’s allotment gardening terms and conditions and guide for allotment gardeners.

Gardening may usually be started around the first week of June once the allotments are harrowed and marked. The city will begin cultivating the community gardens once frost has melted and fields have dried. You may follow when the community gardens are ready to be used on the Allotment Gardening front page. The allotments may be used until September 30.

Please note that the renter of an allotment must follow the city of Oulu’s terms and conditions and instructions for allotment gardeners. Additionally, there are some special conditions in the Viherkuja Community Garden.

Community Gardens 2025 – Current Status

Updated March 6, 2025

  • Rent renewal period begins on March 24, 2025. Free allotments may be rented after May 5, 2025.

  • The Ellinsuo Community Garden is no longer in use in 2025. The garden is closed due to an alteration in the urban plan. Constructing a new community garden is being considered.

  • Hiironen 2 Community Garden is not in use in 2025.

  • Primarily, the gardener must deliver water to the garden independently since the gardens do not include water points.

  • Viherkuja Community Garden includes 4 water tanks since a water point has not been established. The tanks are filled once every week. Additionally, a key to water hydrants in Hietasaari may be obtained from Oulu10 Service Point in the address Torikatu 10.

  • The passages in the Viherkuja Community Garden will be made wider based on feedback. The large number of passages makes moving in the garden difficult. The width of passages will be 35 cm + 35 cm = 70 cm. The change will be implemented during the gardening season of 2024. Read more detailed instructions from the Viherkuja page.

  • Driving a car in the Community Gardens is prohibited. At Viherkuja, cars can be parked in the parking area by the Community Garden.
