Afternoon Care

You can apply for a place in afternoon care for a first or a second grader, or for a special education pupil in grades three to ten. A place in afternoon care can be admitted if the child's guardian(s) work or study, or there is some other notable reason for needing a place in afternoon care.

Afternoon care provides children with guided activities in a safe and stimulating environment after school. In afternoon care children can play, craft, do homework and participate in various guided activities both indoors and outdoors. An afternoon snack is also provided.

Afternoon care groups operate between 11.00 and 16.30 in schools, youth centres and different parishes’ congregation spaces.

The City of Oulu Youth Services is in charge of coordinating and organizing afternoon care. Along with the city, afternoon care is also provided by different organizations, Evangelical-Lutheran parishes and private schools' support associations.

Instructions on Applying, Charges and Termination of a Place in Afternoon Care

How to Apply for a Place in Afternoon Care

Afternoon Care Charges

Afternoon care is subject to a charge: the charge for afternoon care is 120 euros a month (August-May). School terms and holidays do not affect the amount of the charge. The charge covers the expenses of the guidance, accident insurance costs, afternoon snacks and any materials used at the care.

If a child is enrolled in afternoon care midmonth, a full monthly charge of 120 euros is charged.

Absence due to sickness and charges

If a child falls ill and cannot participate in afternoon care for more than 10 days or less in one month, the monthly care charge is reduced to half, meaning 60 euros.

No charge will be billed in case the absence due to sickness lasts for an entire calendar month.

In case your child is absent from care due to a reason other than falling ill, the monthly charge will be reduced to half, meaning 60 euros.

Instructions on billing

Families whose children are in afternoon care provided by the City of Oulu will be billed subsequently. If you have not selected to receive an electronic invoice, a paper invoice is sent to your home address.

Interest on overdue payments is in accordance with the Interest Act. The charge is distrainable without a separate court ruling.

For any questions regarding invoicing, please contact Coordinator Jaana Valtanen: jaana.valtanen@ouka.fi or tel. 044 7038230.

Billing is operated by Monetra Oulu Oy (Service Specialist Leila Holappa, tel. 044 7034044).

Service providers (organizations, perishes and private schools' support associations) are in charge of billing their own customers. Service providers are subject to the same charging instruction as the children in the city's activities are. Service providers will inform their customers regarding billing and provide them with contact information for any questions related to billing.

Sibling discount and exemption from charges

If a family simultaneously has two or more siblings in afternoon care, a full charge is charged only for the first child. Half of the full charge, meaning 60 euros, is charged for the other siblings.

Please contact your afternoon care provider with any questions related to sibling discount. You can find the service providers' contact information at the bottom of this page.

If a family receives basic amount of social assistance, an exemption from afternoon care charges can be admitted.

A family can apply for a discretionary exemption in case they have a significantly low income and receive for example housing benefit.

For any questions regarding exemption from charges, please contact Coordinator Jaana Valtanen: jaana.valtanen@ouka.fi, tel. 044 7038230.
