Library Collections

The library offers an extensive, up-to-date and evolving collection of printed books. The selection includes fiction and non-fiction in different languages and for all age groups: for adults, youth and children. The e-materials of the Northern eLibrary complement the physical collection.

Special groups are offered various materials, including large print books, easy-to-read books, simple language books, audiobooks and touch books. 

The loan period for books is usually 28 days. Short loans have a loan period of 14 days, and they cannot be renewed. Short loan books cannot be reserved either.

The library’s magazine selection is extensive and focuses on popularized magazines. Digital magazine services at the Northern eLibrary complement the collection of printed magazines.

Periodicals

The latest issue of a periodical is not available for borrowing, but it can be read in the library. Older issues can be reserved and borrowed. The loan period for magazines is 28 days.  

Old volumes of magazines are stored and can be reserved for loan. Storage periods vary depending on the magazine. 

Newspapers

Newspapers can be read in libraries. They are not lent to customers. Newspapers are stored for 1–3 months, depending on the paper.

E-magazines

E-magazines provided by the Northern eLibrary can be read in library premises on the appliances provided by the library or on the customer's own device. Most e-materials can also be used remotely outside the library. Using the services is free of charge.

Microfilms

Local newspapers’ volumes are on microfilm. Microfilm reels can be acquired by contacting Yli-Ii Library (yli-ii.kirjasto@ouka.fi) via email or by reserving the microfilms choice on the OUTI Web Library. Select Pekuri Library as the pick-up location. The microfilm reader is available for your use at the Pekuri Library, and it can be reserved to your use on Varaamo or the library’s customer service.

Microfilm are for in-library use only and may not be checked out.

The library’s music collection includes CDs and LPs, sheet music, books, and music recordings on DVD and Blu-ray. Musical instruments can also be borrowed. The library has a subscription to several music-themed magazines. 

The most extensive music collection is in Karjasilta Library, where you can also find music-related magazines and the instruments you can borrow: ukulele, cajon, five-string kantele, acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, tambourine, rhythm bag, banjo and mandolin. The loan period for musical instruments is 14 days, and the late fee is 0,40 €/day. The instruments must be returned back to Karjasilta Library.

Other libraries have music-related materials varyingly.

The physical collection is complemented by the Northern eLibrary services Naxos Music Library, Rockway and Medici.tv. Sheet music by Veikko Juntunen can also be found online. 

The loan period for CDs, records, sheet music and books is 28 days. The loan period for DVDs and Blu-rays is 14 days.

The library has a diverse collection of DVD and Blu-ray films for all age groups. The selection includes movies and TV series, both new material and classics. Only films with lending rights can be acquired by the library. Streaming service Viddla in Northern eLibrary complements the physical collection. 

The loan period for DVDs and Blue-ray discs is 14 days, and the late fee is 0,40 €/day.

The library follows the films’ and series’ age limits and does not lend them to customers who are too young. 

Video games are available for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and Playstation game consoles. You can borrow a maximum of four console games at a time. Video games can be borrowed at Karjasilta Library. You can also reserve games in the OUTI Web Library to pick them up from your local library. The library follows the games’ age limits and does not lend them to customers who are too young.

Board games can also be reserved in the web library and picked up from your local library.

The loan period for board and console games is 14 days, and the late fee is 0.40 €/day. 

Available are, for example, disc golf sets, street basketballs, kettlebells, snowshoes and sports equipment bags. Games and sports equipment must be returned to the same library from which they were borrowed. These items cannot be reserved or renewed. The loan period is 14 days, and the late fee is 0,40 €/day.
