What to do when facing a malfunction
When there is a malfunction in the flow of water, first check the malfunction report below and the malfunction map. Large and small malfunctions are reported there as soon as the disturbances are discovered.
Water looks brown or murky
Repairs in the pipeline, hydraulic impacts or heavy water extraction may loosen deposits from the inside surfaces of the pipeline. These deposits may tint the water brownish and cloudy.
The water clears normally fairly quickly if you let it run for a while from the tap or wall hydrant. Using brown water is not dangerous but you should let it flow until it clears before use. If the water does not clear up in a reasonable time, contact Oulu Waterworks customer service, tel. 08 558 43800.
Water looks green
If the tap water in building pipeline is green, it normally indicates a leak in the heat exchanger of domestic hot water and means that hot water in the district heating network is mixing with domestic water in the heat exchanger. In fact, green color is used in the district heating water to indicate possible leaks. District heating water does not usually leak from the heat exchanger to domestic cold water and the coloring as such is not dangerous. However, the district heating water has been circulating in the pipe network for a long time, you should not use it and the defect should be repaired without delay.
There is no water
First, check the malfunction map where we provide information about maintenance procedures and any other possible malfunctions in the water supply. Please also check for possible malfunctions in electricity distribution in your area. There is no warm water
Oulu Waterworks supplies only cold water.

If you live in a housing company, contact your building manager or maintenance personnel.
If the property is not connected to district heating, contact a competent HEPAC service.
Possible leakage
If you notice water in abnormal places or see water well up from under the ground to the surface, there might be a leakage in a water pipe. Please contact Oulu Waterworks customer service 08 558 43800 or our on-call emergency number 044 703 3800. Oulu Waterworks staff will visit on site to identify and mark the leaks and start the required procedures of fixing the leak.
If you notice a leak in a water pipe or some other device that causes leak damage in your home, you may quickly shut down your property’s water pipes with the water meter to avoid further damage. After please contact a competent HEPAC service to fix the leak.
If there is a water pipe leak in your plot of land, you may shut down the water from the property’s shut-off valve. It is usually located on the plot of land or on the street. Shutting of the water requires a valve key. If you are not able to close the valve, please contact Oulu Waterworks customer service 08 558 43800. Outside office hours contact the on-call emergency number 044 703 3800. Private HEPAC services may also arrive to shut off the valve. Valves that are located on the streets are closed by Oulu Waterworks.
Water meter is broken, leaks, or water pressure is poor.

Sewer is clogged or drain makes a bubbling noise
The problem may lie either with the service main or in an obstruction in the Oulu Waterworks trunk sewer. Check if all sewers are clogged or if it is a single water point. If none of the sewers are working, please check the property’s inspection pit.

If you live in a housing company, please contact your housing company’s property maintenance company or your property manager.
If the property has a property-specific sewage pumping station, please contact a pump maintenance company. If the property has a sealed tank, arrange its draining with a waste management company.
Inspection pit in sewer system emits a bad smell or it overflows
The cause of the problem may be an obstruction in Oulu Waterworks trunk sewer. Wash basin or toilet bowl is clogged or leaks
As this is a bathroom fixture belonging to the property, the owner of the property or the housing company is responsible for its repairs and maintenance. Please contact a competent HEPAC service.
